Lead generation for consulting firms: which executives hire consultants, why a point of view beats a capabilities list, prices and limits.

By Moe Alhosni · Published 31 October 2026 · 6 min read

Short answer: Lead generation for consulting firms means getting a boutique or mid-sized consultancy into early conversations with executives who have a problem the firm solves, before a formal tender exists. Cold email works for consultancies with a sharp point of view on one problem in one kind of company, and it fails for "we help businesses grow". You pay us for each qualified meeting that happened, after a setup fee. StartMeUp.ai's founder says our work helped it secure the two high-value engagements it was targeting.

I'm Moe Alhosni, and ROI Maximizer is my firm. I sell a service myself, by cold email, so the consulting sale is one I know from the inside: the buyer is buying the people, and the email has to make the people credible in four sentences.

Who hires consultants

The buyer is almost always an executive with a specific problem and some budget they control. Who that is depends on the practice.

PracticeTypical buyerCompany typeTrigger
Strategy and growthCEO, managing director, board memberOwner-managed and PE-backed mid-market firmsNew owner, flat growth, a plan the board rejected

In larger companies, procurement turns any engagement above a certain value into a competitive process. Outbound is how you get known before that happens, so that you are invited rather than reading the tender on a portal.

PE-backed companies deserve a separate list. A new owner usually brings a value creation plan and a deadline, and the portfolio company's leadership is often told to bring in outside help.

What works for consultancies

What does not work

Which numbers matter for a consultancy

A consultancy's maths is unusual: very few deals, each worth a lot. That changes which numbers matter. Reply rates matter less than whether the replies come from people who can sign.

As a frame: Sales.co found only 14.1% of replies in its 2 million-plus email sample were genuinely positive, and 45.1% were auto-replies, as of October 2026. The point for a consultancy is that a reply is not a lead. In our own campaigns, 50% of 1,364 positive replies read in full asked for a call, and 20% asked for proof first (cold email reply rates by industry). Have a short, specific case ready for the proof request. More on how reply figures are counted is in cold email statistics.

Pricing

We take a one-off setup fee of $1,000–$3,000. From then on, you can pay $200–$500 per qualified meeting that took place, or $5,000 a month flat with no meeting fee. There is no minimum term, and a meeting the prospect skips is not charged.

Most consultancies sit at the upper end of the per-meeting range: the buyers are executives, the lists are short, and each meeting can lead to a six-figure engagement. The terms are set out in pay per meeting lead generation pricing.

What we can show

StartMeUp.ai is the closest published result. Its founder, Nicolas Hawat, says we helped shape a strategy that landed the high-value projects the firm was targeting: it aimed for two quality engagements and secured exactly that. That is a published client result about project work, and it is the whole of what I can say about it.

Our other public results are two PR agencies, PR Noir in New York (27 leads, 10 qualified meetings that took place and a $90K deal in its first 45 days) and P1 Communications in the UK (20+ qualified meetings). PR firms sell retainers on expertise and trust, which is close to the consulting sale. We have no published case study for a management consultancy.

Frequently asked questions

How do consulting firms get clients?

Mostly through former colleagues, existing clients and referrals, then speaking, writing and tenders. Outbound is the channel a boutique can control directly, and it works best before a formal procurement process starts.

Does cold email work for consultants?

For firms with a narrow specialism and a clear point of view, yes. StartMeUp.ai secured the two high-value engagements it targeted with our help. Generalist consultancies with long capability lists rarely get useful replies.

Who should a consultancy email?

The executive who owns the problem: a COO for operations work, a CFO for finance transformation, a CEO in an owner-managed firm. Send from the partner who would lead the work.

What does lead generation for a consulting firm cost?

With us, $1,000–$3,000 setup, then $200–$500 per qualified meeting that took place, or a flat $5,000 a month. You can stop whenever you like, and a missed call is free.

Before you sign with anyone

  1. Set a seniority floor. For most consultancies, a qualified meeting is with someone at director level or above who controls budget. Write it down. Six criteria worth agreeing are in what counts as a qualified meeting.
  2. Approve the sender and the voice. If the email goes out under a partner's name, that partner reads and signs off every word.
  3. Count engagements, not meetings, at review time. Agree to review after enough meetings to judge, and measure what turned into proposals.
